Behind the Lens
I’ve spent a lot of time walking around Lake Eola over the years. I’ve photographed the skyline, the sculptures, the people, and more swans than I could ever count. It’s one of those places I never seem to get tired of because every visit is a little different.
On this evening, it was the sky that caught my attention. The clouds rolled in just before sunset, and within a few minutes the western light was reflecting across the entire lake. Then a family of swans quietly entered the frame. They weren’t the subject of the photograph when I arrived, but they became the piece that tied everything together.
When I made this image, I simply thought it captured one of those classic Lake Eola evenings. Since then, the swans have been relocated following the avian flu outbreak. Looking back at the photograph now, it feels like more than a sunset. It preserves a scene that many of us assumed would always be there.
One of the things I love most about photography is that sometimes an image grows in meaning long after the shutter is pressed. This became one of those photographs.
