I photograph places I want to remember.
I'm Patrick Michael, a photographer based in Orlando, Florida. I've spent most of my career photographing people, but I've always carried a camera when I'm not working.
The photographs here come from places I've lived, traveled and returned to—sometimes because I went looking for an image, and sometimes because I simply happened to notice one.
It starts with noticing.
I'm less interested in documenting exactly what a place looked like than making a photograph that captures what made me stop and look in the first place.
Sometimes that means noticing light moving across water, weather building over a familiar place, or a scene everyone else is looking through instead of looking at.
This photograph is a good example. The photographers in the frame were focused on what was happening in front of them. I found myself more interested in the scene they had become.
The camera usually comes with me.
A lot of these photographs begin without much of a plan. I may be walking through Orlando, standing along the coast or traveling somewhere completely new. If the light or the scene starts doing something interesting, I want the camera nearby.
That means some photographs are carefully anticipated. Others happen because I stayed a little longer, changed direction, or noticed something I wasn't expecting.
Different places. Same instinct.
